Everything you need to know about Senegal

Our local experts share their knowledge to prepare your trip.

When to visit Senegal?

The best time to travel to Sénégal extends from November to May, during the dry season. Temperatures remain pleasant on the Petite Côte and in Dakar, the harmattan softens the end of days, and the trails of Sine Saloum as well as those of Bassari country remain passable. From December to February, bird enthusiasts find in Djoudj one of the most beautiful ornithological spectacles in West Africa. March and April become warmer, perfect for the Casamance still lush with vegetation. The rainy season, from July to October, transforms the landscapes: the bush turns green again, the baobabs come back to life, but certain trails become more unpredictable. We adapt each itinerary to this calendar.

What budget should you plan for a trip to Sénégal?

The budget for a trip to Sénégal varies significantly depending on the pace you choose and the level of comfort you seek. Plan for an average of €1,500 to €2,500 per person for two weeks, including international flights, with a formula combining charming lodges, village camps, and more intimate accommodations. The differences mainly come from internal transportation — trails through Bassari country, pirogue in the Saloum, crossing to Casamance — and the choice of English-speaking guides who accompany each stage. Meals in guesthouses remain affordable, around €8 to €15 for a plate of thiéboudieune or yassa. A bespoke Sénégal itinerary allows you to adjust these costs precisely, without compromising the quality of your encounters.

Why organize your trip with a local agency in Senegal?

Working with a local agency in Senegal means relying on people who live the country day in and day out. Based in Mbour, our team knows the trails, the seasons, the families welcoming visitors in Bandafassi or Palmarin, the Saloum boatmen who read the tides like an open book. This closeness changes everything: we adjust an itinerary at the last minute if a Serer ceremony is coming up, we avoid overcrowded sites at peak hours, we guide you toward a bush lodge rather than a soulless hotel. Esprit d'Afrique works directly with its Senegal partners, which guarantees fair prices and equitable remuneration for everyone. You also benefit from secure payment in euros via Nomadays.

What to see on a trip to Senegal?

A trip through Sénégal is built around a few territories with very different atmospheres. Dakar and Gorée Island to delve into history, Lake Rose and the Petite Côte for the first Atlantic lights, then the Saloum Delta, a labyrinth of mangroves, bolongs and shell-covered islands where you navigate by pirogue at sunset. Further east, the Bassari region reveals another Sénégal, mountainous and animist, dotted with perched villages. In the north, Saint-Louis and the Sénégal River tell the story of the colonial era and are home to the Djoudj and Langue de Barbarie reserves. Finally, Casamance, greener and gentler, often closes trips with its Diola villages and the beaches of Cap Skirring.
